Desmond Tutu

,
Hello friends, I would like to share a post from the wonderful Facebook group Jesuits West, based in Portland, Oregon. Desmond Tutu understood that ecumenism can help to tear down religious, political, and social walls that separate us from our common humanity. How fitting that he would choose this period of universal peace between the old year and the new to slip away, as if to say “it is our turn now to carry on the work.” May your holiday week be filled with the promise of a new year ahead and resolve to face the work that still has to be done. Thanks, Gene.
From Jesuits West:
“A great, influential elder is now an eternal, witnessing ancestor. And we are better because he was here.” (Rev. Bernice King)
“He was grounded in the struggle for liberation and justice in his own country, but also concerned with injustice everywhere. He never lost his impish sense of humor and willingness to find humanity in his adversaries.” (Barack Obama)
“He was a true humanitarian and a committed advocate of human rights. I am convinced the best tribute we can pay him and keep his spirit alive is to do as he did and constantly look to see how we too can be of help to others.” (The Dalai Lama)
